Edu
We know Edu since October 18th, 2010. He is a very special Pilot Whale: His distinctive instinct to protect his group is enormous.
For some time, Edu seemed to have set himself the task of protecting Curro, who was severely injured by a ship's propeller in 2008. One day we witnessed how Edu used his fluke to hit the wound directly to clean it - unbelievable! After that Curro always stayed at Edu's side. The two had become inseparable friends - until Curro died in 2013.

This is how we have experienced Edu since the beginning of our adoption program:
2014
Edu, a big male, we saw very often. He sets the tone; therefore he is the "pilot" in his family.
2015
As the pilot of a large family, Edu is usually in the middle of everything and you get the feeling that he takes good care of his family.
2017
We have seen Edu in various groups. He seems to be a unifying and harmonizing big male. We had already noticed this when he stood by the now deceased Curro for a long time.
2018
His instinct to protect his group is still enormous. We have seen Edu 35 times, most often in July.
2019
Baby Hook, Pedro and Edu formed an inseparable family again this year, now also joined by Triangula and her newborn baby.
2020
In the short season of 2020, we saw Edu 11 times. He was always travelling with Pedro. Baby Hook was also there, except once. But even then, she wasn't far away and was spotted 10 minutes beforehand.
2021
This year we saw Edu for the first time relatively late in July. At the beginning of August, Edu was travelling with Baby Hook and Ponce, but then Pedro rejoined the usual triplet. On the 19th of August, we were able to observe the three of them apparently bickering with another group of pilot whales.
2022
Edu was mainly seen in August and September. We saw him a total of 26 times this season. He was always accompanied by Baby Hook. Triángula also joined him 24 times and Pedro 22 times. Most of the time Edu was travelling in groups of 6-7 animals, but four times there were more. During seven sightings he came directly to the boat.
2023
This year we met Edu 45 times. We saw him throughout the season, but most often in July (13 times) and September (11 times). He came close to the boat on 13 occasions. Except for 4 times, Baby Hook was always with him. Other faithful companions were Triangula (over 30 times) and Nuria (over 15 times).
2024
We were able to observe Edu over 50 times this year. Most often he was travelling with 7 other pilot whales, but seven times also in very large groups of 30 animals or more. On the 21st of June he was with the whales that were annoying a sperm whale. His companions did not change, they were mainly Baby Hook, Triangula and Nuria.
